The amp gives about 0.5W into 32 ohms. In the classical definition of class A, the top transistors would be sourcing 120mA and the bottom transistors sinking 0mA. However the two 3k resistors in the second stage actually prevent the total shutdown of either transistor bank by keeping the opposing stage at an absolute minimum of 5mA. In any case, 0.5W into Grados is unbelieveably loud...

Although the TDA2030 can deliver 20 watts of output power, I deliberately reduced the output power to about 8 watts to supply 10 watt speakers. Input sensitivity is 200mV. Higher input levels naturally will give greater output, but no distortion should be heard. The gain is set by the 47k and 1.5k resistors. The TDA2030 IC is affordable and makes a good replacement amplifier for low to medium audio power systems. Incidentally, it is speaker efficiency that determines how "loud" your music is. Speaker efficiency or sound pressure level (SPL) is usually quoted in dB/meter. A speaker with an SPL of 97dB/m will sound louder than a speaker with an SPL of 95dB/m...

While doing research for the article Designing an Opamp Headphone Amplifier, I built a portable headphone amplifier for testing purposes. Each channel uses a single Burr-Brown OPA134 opamp in a non-inverting configuration. It has adequate current capability to drive most headphones without an output stage. I have used it with Sennheiser 465s (94dB SPL) and achieved ear-splitting volume. I spent much of 1997 designing and building my ultimate dream amplifier, which I named "The Emperor`s New Amplifier"TM (TENA) for a quality it shares with the fabled emperor`s wardrobe-- transparency. It was also an oblique reference to the marketing hype that pollutes high-end audio. I thought about commercializing it, especially when the lab where I worked announced it was shutting down, but I soon realized that marketing high-end tube amplifiers is not a reliable way to make a living. (I`m paycheck-addicted.) Counterpoint Electronics, a high-end audio manufacturer located in a 45,000 square foot building five miles from where I lived at the time, vanished overnight.
