When I build up this card, the 74*86 IC is `socketed,` both to protect the IC during soldering, and to allow for experimentation with IC subfamily. Similarly, the timing resistors and timing capacitors are plugged into individual sockets to allow for tinkering with circuit timing (i.e., motor rotation speed). visit page.

The "Happy Birthday Singer" solar engine

The happy-birthday singer is a two bit wide by n words deep programable sequencer with 4 commands: reset to start vector (00), decrease frequency (01),increase frequency (10), and pause (11). The device starts out with a 2 word vector jump at the start of memory which locates 16 positions in it`s...

BEAM pummer circuits

The PowerSaver Flasher uses capacitive output coupling to produce brighter shorter flashes and has a much lower average current drain than standard bicore or 74HC14 flashers. The PS Flasher with one LED circuit (2 LEDs) runs all night from a 1F capacitor charged to 5.5V. Up to 12 LEDs can be...

The MicroPower SE

A `micro power solar engine` has been a goal since my introduction to BEAM Robotics. I believe that if there wasn`t one before, I there is one now. What I`m presenting to you looks very similar to one of the circuits found in Steven Bolt`s web pages. As you will see, I made only minor...

Chloroplast solar engines

Craig Maynard dreamed up the Chloroplast solar engine (an interesting design, tho' it uses two parts you probably won't have sitting around in your parts drawer). Since I really can't describe it better than Craig can, here's his description (from the Chloroplast web site), followed up by...

The P5v2 5-motor walker circuit

The 74AC240 chips (U1-U5) are used as H-bridge style motor drivers since they have almost double the drive current compared to 74HC240 chips. These motor driver chips are permanently enabled by grounding control pins 1 and 19. The two groups each have four inputs connected in common to a bicore...

The dual slope-sampling solar engine

The dual slope-sampling solar engine. Yet another interesting design from the fertile mind of Wilf Rigter If you had time to experiment with the ALF type SE circuit you may have discovered some of its shortcomings with regard to a Power Smart Head adaptation. The problem is that HCMOS gates are...

The "Tritium" type 3 solar engine

The Tritium circuit was the first (to my knowledge) type 3 SE. As such, it is quite experimental, and should be regarded as a prototype rather than the `state of the art`! Nevertheless, it does function reasonably well, and in some circumstances outperforms other solar engines such as the Freds...

Wilf Rigter`s SIMD1 V3

The SIMD1 V3 is very similar to the NPN flavor of SIMD1 V2, but with the addition of a FET on the output line. This makes life easier for its attached load (since there`s no need here for something that can use an "enable line"), by providing power that`s just "there" in the dark. Here the FET...
