Its called water softener and its automated circuit using two 555 timers. The cost of parts is nearly 10$ and its very easy to build it. Datasheet file1: Click here to download LM7812.pdf datasheet. Telephone-controlled tape starter This circuit converts a tape recorder into a completely automatic telephone conversation recording instrument that needs no external power source. Field-effect transistor Ql is configured in the common-source self-biased mode; optional resistor Rl sets the input impedance to any desired value. Commonly, it will be 50 ohms. The signal is then... A simple single-transistor circuit will give approximately 15 dB boost or cut at 100 Hz and 15 kHz respectively. A low noise audio type transistor is used, and the output can be fed directly into any existing amplifier volume control to which the tone control is to be fitted The circuit displays drain current versus gate voltage for both P and N-channel JFETS Simple Water Level Controller

Looks like all the resistors are present to me. First timer ~ 4.6Hz, second timer ~1.5Khz. The first timer is frequency modulating the second timer. "L" is an inductor, a coil of wire would around the pipe to couple the water to a varying magnetic field. Can't imagine how this softens water.

Bogus schematic. left side is missing, where timing resistor would be, on the first IC!!!
Also, on what kind of chemical or physical mechanisms does it work ????
To make any difference, on the water passing thrum that pipe, you might need a few kilowatts!!!
Both oscillators seem to output same frequency ?!?!?
Jeez...

sir/madam,
This is sethu from india.i am a regular reader of next.gr.now i want to know some details about water softener circuit.in the given circuit what is "L" it means what?? plz explain that and give some details about what kind of chemical reaction will take place in water due to this circuit..thank you.

M any more thanks for issue of water softener circuits. O.k. Since impure water contains solute particles as calcium&magnesium in the form chlorides and sulphates the hardness come out.Even though there will be different system such as r.o&ion exhange process, water softening by high frequency mean

I bought a commercial version. This circuit keeps minerals in solution. Before, I had rock hard crusts on faucets and showerhead, after 6-12 months (works slow!) they are now soft, easy to remove, and don't form as fast. I also built this circuit, those 10nF caps should be 10 microfarad!
