VU (Volume Unit) meters used to be the mainstay of audio metering systems, but they have been replaced by LED metering in a great many mixers and other applications. Even in software, the most common level meter is made to look like an LED meter. The Peak Programme Meter (PPM) was originally developed by the BBC to overcome the shortcomings of the VU meter, which is notoriously bad at showing the peak signal level. The VU meter is average reading, and the ballistics are important if an accurate reading is to be obtained. visit page.

LOPT / FBT Tester

This little instrument identifies faults in horizontal output stages by doing a `ring` test, i.e. it applies pulses to the LOPT / FBT primary circuit, and counts the number of damped oscillations or `rings` produced. For each `ring` down to about 15% of the test pulse amplitude, one LED in the...

Digital-ad-capacitance-meter

The circuit charges and discharges a capacitor at a crystal-controlled rate, and stores on a sample-anddifference amplifier the change in voltage achieved. The current that flows during the discharge cycle is averaged, and ratiometrically measured in the a/d using the voltage change as a...

Telephone call meter circuit

In this circuit, a simple calculator, in conjunction with a COB (chip-on-board) from an analogue quartz clock, is used to make a telephone call meter. The calculator enables conversion of STD/ISD calls to local call equivalents and always displays current local call-meter reading. The circuit is...

Barometer

The Bray Barometer requires manual calibration for voltage offset and gain. Although practical on the workbench, these devices are most likely mounted in inconvenient locations making secondary adjustment difficult. The Bray Barometer uses potentiometers for offset and gain adjustments....

milliohmmeter with AT90S2313

A milliohmmeter is just the tool for checking trace resistance on a printed circuit board, tracking down shorted traces, and measuring the contact resistance of a switch or connector. Its the kind of tool that would come in real handy occasionally, but not often enough to justify shelling out...

Capacitance meter with 555

The tool is based on a NE555 (or LM555) timer i.c., wired as an astable multivibrator. The frequency of the multivibrator is determined by the value of the unknown capacitor Cx. The circuit can be fed by a small battery. I use myself a 9 V block battery which is connected to pins 4 and 8 of the...

Audio Peak / Beat LED indicator

This indicator can be used, or see if your speakers can be damaged by the noise power. With P1 you can set the limit to which D1 LED lights. The pot is 100k here, you can even experiment with other values. If you are a logical port on the switch or LED is an opto coupler would use it so you can...

Zener tester

This circuit provides a low cost and reliable method of testing zener diodes. RVl can be calibrated in volts, so that when LED 1 just lights, the voltage on pins 2 and 3 are nearly equal. Hence, the zener voltage can be read directly from the setting of RVl. The supply need only be as high a...
