A 555 timer can be used to generate a squarewave to produce a negative voltage relative to the negative battery terminal. When the timer output at pin 3 goes positive, the series 22 uF capacitor charges through the diode (D1) to about 8 volts. When the output switches to ground, the 22 uF cap discharges through the second diode (D2) and charges the 100 uF capacitor to a negative voltage. The negative voltage can rise over several cycles to about -7 volts but is limited by the 5.1 volt zener diode which serves as a regulator.Circuit draws about 6 milliamps from the battery without the zener diode connected and about 18 milliamps connected. Output current available for the load is about 12 milliamps. An additional 5.1 volt zener and 330 ohm resistor could be used to regulate the +9 down to +5 at 12 mA if a symmetrical +/- 5 volt supply is needed. The battery drain would then be around 30 mA. visit page.

Power supply protection circuit

When using a regulated supply to reduce a supply voltage there is always the danger of component failure in the supply and consequent damage to the equipment. A fuse will protect when excess current is drawn, but might be too slow to cope with overvoltage conditions. The values shown are for a 12...

Voltage Doubler Circuit

If you want to try a higher voltage with your pedals, try this simple and easy voltage doubler circuit which uses an ICL7660 CMOS Voltage Converter Chip I have found that JFETs such as the J201 sound much better at 18V than they do at 9V with more clean to distorted headroom. Op amps should have...

Voltage Inverter

This simple circuit is a good solution to the powering a dual supply op amp from a single battery problem. The circuit simply takes a positive voltage and inverts it. It uses only one 555 timer and a few other passive components, so it doesn`t add much in the way of size and cost to a project.

Variable Voltage Regulation

Controlling the output voltage from a regulator can be made variable in three ways:- 1. Using a fixed reference zener diode to increase the output by the value of the zener 2. A variable resistor for variable output, note that a voltage less than the nominal regulator is not possible 3. A...
