This circuit demonstrates how to use bootstrapping to seriously boost the output power of the timer. The LC555 can only put out about 50mA as it is. This circuit can put out at least 200mA and goes to the rail as well. The LM555 timer puts out 300mA max, but doesnt go all the way to the rail. Replace Q1 with a big MOSFET, and you can put out big current with these few components. visit page.

This application note uses a timer IC (ICL7555), CMOS logic and discrete transistors to automatically control the conversion the MAX190 12-bit SAR analog-to-digital converter (ADC). Delay circuit with NE555 timer

This circuit design was used to switch on device via a LED photocell arrangement (optocoupler) using components R1, C1, D1 and Q1. It produces a delay on powering up to ensure correct sequencing of certain equipment. A very simple delay timer using a single transistor and an R-C timing circuit.

Mono stable with 555 and relay

The two circuits below illustrate using the 555 timer to close a relay for a predetermined amount of time by pressing a momentary N/O push button. The circuit on the left can be used for long time periods where the push button can be pressed and released before the end of the timing period. For...

A 555-based solar engine

In March of 2003, Manfred Schaffran posted a solar engine design using a 555 timer IC: Wilf Rigter simplified this circuit a bit, made it phototropic, and doubled it up to yield a photopopper design in a post later the same day. I`ve got this design written up elsewhere in the library.

INFRARED REMOTE CONTROL TIMER

This infrared remote control timer can be used to turn an appliance on/off for a period of 0.11 second to 110.0 seconds. The circuit comprises two sections, namely, the transmitter section and the receiver section. Fig. 1 shows the IR transmitter section. The astable multivibrator NE555 (IC1) is...

LED Torch

The LED Torch is based on a 7555 timer running in astable mode (do not use an ordinary 555). A white LED (Maplin order code NR73) produces 400 mcd light output, which, when focussed, can illuminate objects at 30 metres. Try Conrad Electronic for what appears to be a stronger white LED (order code...

555 Timer as an A/D converter

I had a Basic Stamp project that needed to measure a nominal 12 volt battery, and I wanted a simple solution. This is the simplest I could come up with. The 555 timer will put out positive pulses. The pulse width is inversely proportional to the difference in voltage between the voltage at...

LED Chaser

I don`t know why, but people like blinking lights. You see LED chasers everywhere, in TV shows (Knight Rider), movies, and store windows. This schematic is my version of a simple 10 LED chaser. There is no 555 timer used because at my local electronics store they are over $4 Cdn. Instead, an...
