NE5410 - 10-Bit High-Speed Multiplying D/A Converter Technical Summary

NE5410/SE5410 - 10-Bit High-Speed Multiplying Digital-to-Analog Converter

Overview

The NE5410 and SE5410 are high-performance 10-bit multiplying digital-to-analog converters (DACs) designed for applications requiring fast settling times and high accuracy. These devices are pin- and function-compatible with the industry-standard MC3410 while offering improved performance characteristics. The NE5410/SE5410 are ideal for use in high-speed digital systems, test equipment, and waveform generation applications where precision and speed are critical.

These DACs feature a wide compliance voltage range and are designed to operate with standard supply voltages of +5V and -15V. The internal architecture includes an R-2R ladder network with precision current switches and a reference current amplifier, enabling high-speed multiplication operations with excellent linearity.

Functional Description

The NE5410/SE5410 utilize an R-2R ladder network architecture with precision current switches to achieve high-speed digital-to-analog conversion. The device accepts a 10-bit parallel digital input and converts it to an analog current output with fast settling time characteristics.

The reference amplifier is internally compensated and can accept both positive and negative reference voltages, enabling four-quadrant multiplication operations. The digital inputs are designed to be compatible with both TTL and CMOS logic levels, providing flexibility in system design.

The output stage provides a current output that is proportional to the product of the digital input code and the reference voltage. This multiplying capability makes the device particularly useful in applications requiring programmable gain or attenuation.
