A DS18S20-based serial port temperature sensor has been developed for connection to the USB port of an Asus WL-500gp v2. The temperature sensor functions correctly when directly connected to a PC's serial port; however, issues arise when attempting to interface it with a USB-RS232 serial port adapter. The suspected cause of the problem is that the serial port adapter provides only 5 volts, similar to USB, whereas a traditional serial port may supply a slightly higher voltage. There is a consideration to derive power from an alternative source.

The DS18S20 temperature sensor is a digital thermometer that communicates via a one-wire interface, allowing for the connection of multiple sensors on a single data line. It operates within a temperature range of -55°C to +125°C with a resolution of 9 to 12 bits. The sensor requires a power supply of 3.0V to 5.5V, which is compatible with the output from a USB-RS232 adapter.

When connecting the DS18S20 to a USB-RS232 adapter, it is crucial to ensure that the voltage levels are appropriate for reliable operation. The concern regarding the voltage output from the USB-RS232 adapter is valid, as some adapters may not provide sufficient voltage levels or adequate current for the sensor's operation, especially during the initialization phase.

To troubleshoot this issue, it is advisable to verify the voltage output from the USB-RS232 adapter using a multimeter. If the voltage is indeed limited to 5V and does not fluctuate, it may be necessary to explore alternative power sources. Options include using a dedicated power supply or a battery that can provide a stable voltage above 5V, while still within the sensor's operating range.

Additionally, ensuring that the wiring and connections between the DS18S20 and the USB-RS232 adapter are secure and free from shorts or interference is essential. It may also be beneficial to check the configuration settings of the serial port on the Asus WL-500gp v2 to confirm that they match the communication parameters of the DS18S20, including baud rate and data bits.

In summary, successful integration of the DS18S20 temperature sensor with a USB-RS232 adapter requires careful consideration of voltage levels, power supply options, and proper configuration of communication settings.Hello, I`ve made a DS18S20 -based serial port temperature sensor. I would like to connect it to the usb port on my Asus WL-500gp v2. The temperature sensor works perfectly on the pc connected to a serial port directly, but I can`t get it to work with my usb-rs232 serial port adapter. I think the problem with my circuit is that the serial port adapter supplies only 5 volts (like usb does) and a ""real"" serial port should supply a little bit more..?

I know I could take the power from.. 🔗 External reference
