This is an LM338-based power supply that is uncomplicated and easy to construct. It has been in use for an extended period without any issues. The circuit lacks a current adjustment feature, which has been addressed by incorporating an LCD panel ammeter. There is no printed circuit board (PCB) for this design; instead, a 3x16 copper plate was utilized, with unused areas stripped away using a knife. Analog meters can also be used in place of LCD panels.

The LM338 voltage regulator is a versatile component known for its ability to deliver adjustable output voltage and high current capacity. In this power supply design, the LM338 is configured to provide a stable output voltage that can be adjusted according to the user’s requirements, typically ranging from 1.25V to 37V with a maximum output current of 5A.

The circuit consists of the LM338, a few passive components, and an ammeter for current monitoring. The input voltage should be higher than the desired output voltage by at least 3V to ensure proper regulation. A heat sink is often necessary to dissipate heat generated by the LM338 during operation, especially when supplying higher currents.

The design can be built on a copper plate, where the layout is crucial for minimizing noise and ensuring stable operation. The copper plate serves as a makeshift PCB, where the LM338 and associated components are mounted. The unused areas of the copper plate are stripped away to prevent short circuits and to optimize the layout.

For current measurement, the LCD panel ammeter is connected in series with the load, allowing real-time monitoring of the output current. Alternatively, analog meters can be employed for a more traditional approach. The choice between LCD and analog meters depends on the user's preference and the specific application requirements.

This power supply is suitable for various applications, including powering small electronic projects, testing circuits, and providing a stable voltage source for other devices. The simplicity of the design makes it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced electronics enthusiasts looking for a reliable power supply solution. This is a LM338 based power supply which is not complicated and easy to build. I am using the supply for a long time, have no problem yet. Only current adjust is missing but I overcome this situation by using an LCD panel ampermeter. There is no PCB for the circuit. I took a 3x16 copper plate and strip the unused areas by a knife. If you want you can use analog meters instead of LCD panels. We aim to transmit more information by carrying articles.
