The ICM7226 is a fully integrated Universal Counter and LED Display driver. It combines a high-frequency oscillator, a decade timebase counter, an 8-decade data counter and latches, a 7-segment decoder, digit multiplexer, and segment and digit drivers, which can directly drive large LED displays. The counter inputs accept a maximum frequency of 10 MHz in frequency and unit counter modes and 2 MHz in other modes. Both inputs are digital. In many applications, amplification and level shifting may be required to obtain proper digital signals for these inputs. The ICM7226 can function as a frequency counter, period counter, frequency ratio (fA/fB) counter, time interval counter, or as a totalizing counter. The device requires either a 10 MHz or 1 MHz quartz crystal timebase, or an external timebase can also be used. For period and time interval measurements, the 10 MHz timebase provides a resolution of 0.1 seconds. In period average and time interval average modes, the resolution can reach the nanosecond range. In frequency mode, the user can select accumulation times of 0.01 seconds, 0.1 seconds, 1 second, and 10 seconds. With a 10-second accumulation time, the frequency can be displayed with a resolution of 0.1 Hz. There is a 0.2-second delay between measurements in all ranges. Control signals are provided to enable gating and storing of prescaler data. By Intersil Corporation

The ICM7226 is a versatile and sophisticated device designed for applications requiring precise frequency measurement and display capabilities. It integrates multiple functionalities into a single chip, thereby reducing the complexity and size of electronic systems. The high-frequency oscillator is crucial for generating accurate timing signals, while the decade timebase counter and 8-decade data counter facilitate counting operations over a broad range of frequencies.

The digital inputs of the ICM7226 are designed to handle signals up to 10 MHz, making it suitable for high-speed applications. However, in scenarios where the input signals may not meet the required logic levels, external amplification and level shifting circuits are recommended to ensure reliable operation. The device's ability to function in various modes, including frequency counting, period measurement, and time interval measurement, enhances its utility in diverse applications ranging from laboratory testing to industrial monitoring.

The requirement for a quartz crystal timebase or an external timebase provides flexibility in system design. The choice between a 10 MHz and a 1 MHz crystal allows users to optimize performance based on their specific needs. The high-resolution capabilities, particularly in period and time interval measurements, enable precise timing applications, which is essential in fields such as telecommunications and instrumentation.

In frequency mode, the user can select from multiple accumulation times, allowing for adjustments based on the desired measurement accuracy and response time. The ability to display frequency with a resolution of 0.1 Hz over a 10-second accumulation period is particularly useful for applications requiring stable readings. The 0.2-second measurement interval ensures that the device can provide timely updates in dynamic environments.
