This project has been specially designed to introduce you to SMD (Surface Mount Devices). Surface Mount is really not new. It started as far back as 1940 with a hybrid circuit in a digital watch. A chip was cemented onto a slab of ceramic material having gold tracks and film resistors. The LED display was mounted in a similar fashion and the whole assembly coated in epoxy to protect it before fitting into the watch case.

The Surface Mount Devices (SMD) are a type of electronic component that are mounted directly onto the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs). They are characterized by their small size and low profile, which make them ideal for use in compact electronic devices, such as digital watches. The use of SMD in electronic design has numerous advantages, including reduced board space, higher component density, and improved performance at high frequencies.

The hybrid circuit mentioned in the description refers to a circuit that combines both analog and digital components. This type of circuit was used in the digital watch, where a chip was cemented onto a ceramic slab. The ceramic slab served as the substrate for the circuit, providing a stable and durable base for the components. The chip was connected to gold tracks and film resistors, which are common components in hybrid circuits.

The gold tracks on the ceramic slab function as the conductive paths for the electrical signals. These tracks are typically made of gold due to its excellent conductivity and resistance to corrosion. The film resistors, on the other hand, are used to control the voltage and current within the circuit. They are made of a thin film of resistive material that is deposited onto the ceramic substrate.

The LED display of the digital watch was mounted in a similar way to the chip. It was attached to the ceramic slab and connected to the circuit via the gold tracks. The LED display is an essential component of the digital watch, as it is responsible for displaying the time.

The entire assembly was coated in epoxy to protect it from physical damage and environmental factors, such as moisture and dust. This is a common practice in electronic manufacturing to ensure the longevity and reliability of the devices.

The assembly was then fitted into the watch case, completing the construction of the digital watch. This process involves careful alignment and fitting of the components to ensure that the watch functions properly. It is a testament to the precision and meticulousness required in electronic engineering. This project has been specially designed to introduce you to SMD (Surface Mount Devices).
