Ballast Control IC Design

The IRPLLNR2 is a high efficiency, high power factor, fixed output electronic ballast designed for driving rapid start fluorescent lamp types. The design contains an EMI filter, active power factor correction and a ballast control circuit using the IR21571. This demo board is intended to ease the evaluation of the IR21571 Ballast Control IC, demonstrate PCB layout techniques and serve as an aid in the development of production ballasts using the International Rectifier IR21571. More: Features Drives: 1 x 32W T8 Lamp (IRPLLNR2U) 1 x 36W T8 Lamp (IRPLLNR2) Input: 90-140VAC/60Hz (IRPLLNR2U) 185-265VAC/50Hz (IRPLLNR2) High Power Factor/Low THD High Frequency Operation (42kHz) Lamp Filament Preheating Lamp Fault Protect

The IRPLLNR2 electronic ballast is engineered to efficiently drive rapid start fluorescent lamps, specifically designed to optimize power factor and minimize total harmonic distortion (THD). The core of the design integrates an EMI filter that mitigates electromagnetic interference, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and enhancing overall system performance.

Central to the operation of the IRPLLNR2 is the IR21571 Ballast Control IC, which governs the control circuit and facilitates high-frequency operation at approximately 42 kHz. This frequency is advantageous for reducing the size of passive components and improving the efficiency of the ballast. The IC also incorporates active power factor correction, which significantly enhances the power factor, allowing the device to draw current more effectively from the AC supply.

The ballast is capable of driving various fluorescent lamp configurations, including a 32W T8 lamp (model IRPLLNR2U) and a 36W T8 lamp (model IRPLLNR2), accommodating different input voltage requirements. The IRPLLNR2U operates within a range of 90-140VAC at 60Hz, while the IRPLLNR2 is designed for higher voltage applications, functioning between 185-265VAC at 50Hz.

Additional features include lamp filament preheating, which extends the life of the lamp by reducing stress during ignition, and lamp fault protection, which safeguards the circuit against potential failures, ensuring reliable operation. This ballast design serves as a comprehensive solution for developers looking to create production-grade ballasts, providing a robust platform for evaluation and refinement of PCB layout techniques. The IRPLLNR2 is a high efficiency, high power factor, fixed output electronic ballast designed for driving rapid start fluorescent lamp types.
