A gas sensor (TGS823 from Allegro Electronics, Cornwall Bridge, CT 06754) conducts in the presence of explosive gases. U5 is a voltage-to-frequency converter that produces a frequency proportional to the sensor conductance. The output frequency ranges from 100 Hz in clean air to 8 kHz in a contaminated atmosphere. The DC voltage from the sensor also drives a bar graph LED (U7) and comparators (U4-b and U4-c) to sense current caution and danger levels. Additionally, U1 drives an AC load of up to 100 mA (relay, indicator, alarm, etc.).

The TGS823 gas sensor operates by changing its conductance in response to the presence of specific explosive gases, making it suitable for safety applications in environments where gas leaks may occur. The sensor's output is utilized by a voltage-to-frequency converter (U5), which translates the varying conductance into a frequency signal. This frequency is indicative of the gas concentration: a frequency of 100 Hz indicates clean air, while a frequency of 8 kHz signifies a high concentration of explosive gases.

The DC voltage output from the sensor serves multiple functions. It powers a bar graph LED (U7), providing a visual indication of gas levels. The comparators (U4-b and U4-c) are configured to trigger at predefined thresholds, allowing the system to distinguish between caution and danger levels based on the sensor's voltage output. When the gas concentration exceeds the caution level, U4-b activates, and if it exceeds the danger level, U4-c activates, potentially triggering alarms or other safety measures.

Furthermore, U1 is capable of driving an AC load of up to 100 mA, which can include devices such as relays, indicators, or alarms. This feature enhances the system's capability to respond to gas detection by enabling the activation of external devices, thereby increasing safety in potentially hazardous environments. The entire circuit is designed to provide real-time monitoring and response to gas concentrations, ensuring effective safety management.
