Since my page was first posted, I have received a number of emails asking about a high current power supply. I looked around, but couldn't find one that was suitable. So, I designed this. It is a linear supply, which might have a few of you rolling your eyes, but it takes very few parts, is simple to build and can supply huge currents.

This high current linear power supply is designed to deliver substantial output current while maintaining simplicity in its construction. The core components of the circuit typically include a transformer, rectifier, filter capacitor, voltage regulator, and output terminals.

The transformer steps down the AC voltage from the mains to a lower AC voltage suitable for the desired output. The choice of transformer should be based on the required output voltage and current specifications. A toroidal transformer is often preferred for its efficiency and compact size.

Following the transformer, a rectifier circuit converts the AC voltage to DC. A full-wave bridge rectifier is commonly used, consisting of four diodes arranged to allow both halves of the AC waveform to contribute to the output. This configuration improves the efficiency of the power supply.

After rectification, the output is typically a pulsating DC voltage, which requires smoothing to reduce ripple. A large filter capacitor is employed for this purpose, storing charge and releasing it to provide a more stable DC output. The capacitor's value should be selected based on the load current and acceptable ripple voltage.

To regulate the output voltage, a linear voltage regulator circuit is incorporated. This may consist of a series pass transistor controlled by an operational amplifier to maintain the desired output voltage despite variations in load current. The linear regulator provides low noise and excellent transient response, making it suitable for sensitive applications.

Finally, output terminals are provided for connecting the load. It is essential to ensure that the wiring and connectors can handle the high current without significant voltage drop or overheating. Adequate heat sinking for the voltage regulator and other heat-generating components is also crucial to maintain reliability and prevent thermal failure.

Overall, this high current linear power supply is an effective solution for applications requiring substantial current output, with an emphasis on simplicity and ease of construction.Since my page was first posted, I have received a number of emails asking about a high current power supply.
