This simple PC Smartcard reader was shown in Electronics Design magazine February 17, 1997 issue on page 172 in the ideas for design section. The circuit is designed by Jose Carlos Cossio and is based on simple smartcard reader design shown on the same magazine July 8, 1996. This circuit takes all smartcard operating power from PC parallel port. The basic circuit idea is quite similar to two simple smartcard readers shown in What you need to know about electronics telecards written by Stephane Bausson. There are some minor differences, which means that all the same software can't be used.

The PC Smartcard reader circuit operates by utilizing the power supplied through the PC's parallel port, which is a common interface in older computer systems. The design integrates a microcontroller that manages communication between the smartcard and the PC. The microcontroller is programmed to handle the specific protocols required for reading and writing data to the smartcard.

The circuit typically includes a voltage regulator to ensure stable power supply levels to the smartcard, which operates at a specific voltage (usually 5V or 3.3V). The reader may also feature a series of capacitors for decoupling and noise reduction to ensure reliable operation during data transmission.

Signal lines from the parallel port are connected to the microcontroller's input/output pins, allowing for bidirectional communication. The smartcard is inserted into a card slot that connects to the microcontroller, facilitating the reading of card data through contact points.

The overall design may incorporate additional components such as resistors for current limiting, diodes for reverse polarity protection, and possibly an LED indicator to signify operational status. The circuit layout must ensure proper grounding and shielding to minimize interference and enhance data integrity.

The differences noted in the design compared to other smartcard readers may pertain to the specific microcontroller used, the arrangement of components, or the software protocols implemented. These variations could affect compatibility with existing software solutions, necessitating tailored software development for this specific reader design. This simple PC Smartcard reader was shown in Electronics Design magazine February 17, 1997 issue on page 172 in the ideas for design section.
